Spanish question (regarding the word “only”)?

Question by dima4@sbcglobal.net: Spanish question (regarding the word “only”)?
Hey! I just need some quick help. I’ve learned that sólo and solamente can be interchanged for the most part and that they both mean “only” in English – they are adverbs. Like “It’s only five cents.” and “Only three people remain.” I also learned that solo (no accent) means “alone” – it’s an adjective.

Which one would I use to indicate that certain things only happen under certain conditions, such as “I only played with him when my brother wasn’t there.”? I would guess that I would use solamente or sólo? So would “Solamente jugaba con él cuando mi hermano no estaba allí.” be correct? Thanks in advance!

Answer by اري
Yes. ‘Solamente jugaba con él cuando mi hermano no estaba allí’ is fine.
You can also say: ‘Sólo jugaba con él cuando mi hermano no estaba allí’

Now, ‘sólo’ can also be written without a tilde (1). This applies to its use as an adjective or an adverb (2). When the word can be interpreted as an adverb or an adjective in a single sentence, then a tilde must be written to its adverbial form to avoid confusion.

Consider these examples:
-’Eric visitará solo el hospital’ (no tilde is needed because ‘solo’ here means ‘by himself’, ‘alone’, an adjective).
-’Eric visitará sólo el hospital’ (a tilde is needed to indicate that ‘sólo’ is an adverb)

However, in a sentence like yours:
- ”Solamente jugaba con él cuando mi hermano no estaba allí”, there is no confusion as to the meaning of solo (as in playing alone) since you are including another person in the sentence. Thus, your sentence can be written like in two ways, the one you used, and this:
‘Solo jugaba con él cuando mi hermano no estaba allí’

What is “two cents”?

Question by ESL: What is “two cents”?
one man says on the interview
“I said, a little aghast, , saying, really? Well, that’s nice, I just, but good. Negotiate. Which meant two cents, actually, no I don’t know what it was, but I was very happy to do it.

■question2■
In this context “flash” means
“showing” or “look nice” ?
“directors flash.” means “have talent”??

“And they’re good with the AVID and all and very flashy. Sometimes, they become very, very good editors. Other times, they just flash. And some directors flash”

Please help me with these!!!
Thak you

I think it means to give someone your honest opinion. I am going to give him my 2 cents worth.

Flash I think means to look in a way that you stand out. You look really flashy in that outfit.
