The definition of penny stocks, also known as micro-cap stocks, varies. A stock is termed as a penny stock based upon its market capitalization and share price. According to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), a stock is termed as penny stock if its share price is below . However, many in the investor community believe that a penny stock is one with the share price of or less. As junk bonds are compared to investment grade bonds in fixed income market, penny stocks are compared with blue chip stocks in stock markets. Trading in penny stocks are far more riskier and speculative than trading in blue-chip or other mid-cap or large-cap stocks. Several investors believe that investing in penny stocks is like gambling, that one has to be prepared for losing money. Moreover trading penny stocks can be more expensive. Penny stocks are usually traded in the Over-the-Counter exchange or on the pink sheets.
If you intend to invest in penny stocks you should know the differences between penny stocks and other stocks, such as blue chips and mid-caps. While the performance of mid-cap and large-cap stocks is driven primarily by fundamentals, several analysts believe that the performance of penny stocks is driven primarily by investor speculations. If you analyze the fundamentals of 100 penny stocks, perhaps only two or three would be generating superior returns.
Despite the issues associated with penny stocks, several investors intend to invest in penny stocks, since they believe many of today’s blue-chip stocks, such as, Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) and Wal Mart (NYSE: WMT) were once penny stocks. However, the share prices of these companies were almost never trading for pennies, however it appears that way when one looks at the price adjusted for stock splits. Many investors ignore this fact.
Since many penny stocks are traded on the pink sheets and are not scrutinized by the SEC, you will find it more difficult to find credible information about them.
Penny stocks often lack liquidity, which means investors would find it difficult to buy or sell. A lack of liquidity often helps fraudulent investors to manipulate the share prices. The SEC itself in Schedule 15G states “Investors in penny stock should be prepared for the possibility that they may lose their whole investment”.
A penny stock traded on the over-the-counter exchange has a higher chance of being delisted for lack of compliance. If the particular company is unable to list its stock on another exchange or become re-instated, you may lose 100% of your investment. You should consider this seriously, if you intend to take long positions in a penny stock.
Several new investors are attracted to penny stocks, given their low price and potential for substantial gains. There have been instances where penny stocks rose more than 1000% in a few days in the past, but this is extremely rare and often the price is not sustained. There are historical evidences that most penny stocks lose their entire value. If you are a new investor, you need to be aware of the risks involved.
If you still want to invest in penny stocks, do the relevant research into the company’s fundamentals and ignore the pre-conceived theories about the successes of the penny stocks in the past.

Gold Penny stocks to watch. Gold has become one of the best investments you can make today. Historically, investors have always turned to gold in a time of economic crisis. When the value of the dollar is plunging, the investment community rushes into gold as a way to protect their assets.
This current economic crisis isn’t just affecting us here in America, it’s affecting the entire world and investors everywhere are turning to gold as a safe haven. I think we all know that this global rescission is not going to magically disappear overnight which would also mean that the rise of gold prices won’t be slowing down just yet.
Last year alone world investment in gold nearly doubled, exceeding 1,900 tonnes-a value of around billion. Yet government, central banks and private investors are not the biggest driving force of Gold’s dramatic price increase. The highest demand of gold comes from the jewelry industry and America is not the country with the highest demand, India is.
A quick history lesson; gold import in India went thru strong restrictions during the two world wars and adopted a fully restricted policy after independence. They didn’t have a reformed policy until the early 1990′s. An interesting fact about the gold control regime was that it prohibited all gold transactions between residents and non-residents. This caused an effect similar to America’s prohibition of black market smuggling and unofficial transactions in foreign exchange began to flourish. India’s gold consumptions accelerated sharply during the 1990′s after the liberalization of the gold import policy.
Today India is the world’s largest consumers of gold. In the first quarter of this year, total consumer demand in India soared 698% to 193.5 tonnes. The jewelry industry there contributes over 15% of the country’s total exports and provides employment to 1.3 million people directly and indirectly.
Penny stocks are a great way to get into gold investing. One of the more profitable investment choices are gold mining stocks. Investors can buy shares in junior gold companies relatively cheap and see staggering gains once the gold starts coming out of the ground.
A junior mining company is an exploration company that looks for new deposits of gold, silver, uranium or other precious minerals. These companies target properties that are believed to have significant potential for finding large mineral deposits.
The junior gold mining companies often see the greatest impact on their share prices, so much so that you don’t have to wait to invest until the gold is being produced. When a junior gold company is in the exploration phase and strikes gold, the share price soars.

In many fundamental ways, blue chip stocks are the opposites of penny stocks. That’s why they tend to draw such different types of investors. Despite this well-known fact though, penny stocks and blue chip stocks are also linked in many ways. These links are what make a stock investment a good way to learn about the market and get comfortable with it despite not being as popular an investment as a blue chip stock.
It All Comes Down to Risk
The qualities that characterize penny stocks have given them a pretty bad reputation. They’re volatile. They’re high risk. They’re easily manipulated. There’s little information on them. All these factors add up to one message for most people: Here there be monsters.Top quality stocks on the other hand offer much less risk. For an investor, a blue chip stock represents something reliable. There’s very little spread between buying and selling prices on these stocks and you are expected to plan on holding them for years as you wait for their value to develop into a profit.

Unfortunately, while blue chip stocks offer little risk, for most of us they also offer very little profit. They’re the safer option when it comes to investing, but you’re still taking a risk. You’re still gambling with your money. Penny stocks, which have a high speculative value, simply offer a much more potentially rewarding prospect to offset the higher risk that you are taking by investing in them. So though the two types of stocks are so completely different from each other, they are united by their natures. Whether you choose to invest in blue chip stocks or penny stocks, your success or failure in the stock market will be due to your skill at reading and reacting to the particular behavior of your stocks in the market.
